We're still here, and we're not going away!

Here is a letter from Jeannie Burlsworth, Secure Arkansas Chair, regarding the events of July 7, 2008:

Dear Secure Arkansas Volunteers and Friends,

We're still working for you! Secure Arkansas is NOT going away. We didn't get our required number of 61,974 signatures or the 30-day extension, but we're forming a NONPARTISAN POLITICAL FORCE because the illegal alien crisis is a VERY important issue in Arkansas.
People are continuing to call us, wanting to send in signatures that they've collected prior to July 8th. Please send in the signatures that you have collected.

Please fill in the Registration Form on our website www.SecureArkansas.com so we can add you to our database and keep you informed of our strategies. If you have an email address, we need to have it!

Keep Collecting!

Your hard work is paying off, but we still need to gather signatures through the week and weekend.

Please keep collecting signatures through the July 4th activities. We'll get them picked up from you so we can turn them in on Monday, July 7.

Petitions need to be notarized before you get them to us, so please find a notary before this weekend! (A notary who is a friend, family member, etc. as most banks will be closed for the holiday.)

We have 2 weeks left to gather signatures. Canvassing is going great, but we're still a little bit shy of our goal. There is NO margin of error. Every signature is important! Be sure that the signers' printed information is legible! (name, birthdate, address)

If we don't get all the signatures we need, it'll be even HARDER to get something done through the legislature.

If you haven't signed yet, go ahead and do so... and get your family and friends to sign AND to help canvass for signatures. We only have until the first part of July! Monday, July 7, Jeannie Burlsworth (our Chairman) will carry in all of our signatures to the Secretary of State.

Go to www.SecureArkansas.com to download petitions and rules. BE SURE to read the rules before you gather signatures. We don't want the Secretary of State to throw out any signatures on a technicality! Most important: each county goes on its own petition signature page.

Turning in Petitions & Continuing to Collect Signatures

Signature gathering is going well! That should be our only focus at this time. As you know, other groups working on initiatives usually spend 9 months gathering signatures. We have the same amount of work to do in just 2 months! Keep up the good work!

WE ARE FREE TO GATHER SIGNATURES!

The Attorney General certified our ballot initiative on Weds, May 7. We then had to have the petition designed and proof-read. After filing our paperwork with the Sec. of State's office on Friday, we were told we could begin to gather signatures! The deadline to turn them in is July 7, but don't wait until then! Start NOW please!

Be sure to read the Instructions first (good idea to print them off your computer - you'll only need the first 3 pages, if your computer asks) . Then scroll down & click the link on the bottom of the Instructions for the Petition Packet. You can print the Petition on both sides of the page, using only 2 sheets of paper instead of 4.

CALL TO ACTION! Decision re. ballot initiative expected on 4/30/08

Wednesday, April 30, we should have a decision whether Dustin McDaniel certifies the ballot initiative or not. Please keep calling his office and ask him to certify it. After all, he is an elected official, and Arkansans deserve the right to vote on this important issue.

Please also write a letter to the editor of the Democrat Gazette or your local paper immediately! The main point is that we want this initiative certified. You have to sign your name and include your address and phone number for verification. (Your address will NOT be published.) There is an example below of a letter to the editor.

The initiative process needs to be fixed in Arkansas. We’re not allowed to collect signatures or even vote on this issue until Attorney General Dustin McDaniel certifies our initiative to limit public benefits for illegal aliens! Some other states in the U.S. do not require this.

Welcome to the Secure Arkansas Blog

Welcome! I'm a Secure Arkansas volunteer, authorized to blog here from time to time.
This is our inaugural post, and I'll do my best to make each entry informative and news-worthy. This will be one method of communicating what's going on regarding Secure Arkansas.

Jeannie Burlsworth, Secure Arkansas Chair, delivered a ballot petition to the Arkansas Attorney General on March 26th regarding illegal immigration. This initiative would require the state and local government to verify the lawful presence in the United States of any person 14 years or older who applies for a federal, state, or local benefit (including applications for business licenses, in-state college tuition, and scholarships.) It would also require gov't agencies to document the types and dollar amounts of benefits provided to persons who are found to be in the United States unlawfully and submit an annual report of the provided benefits and costs.
As you'll read on our website, www.SecureArkansas.com, we are committed to the rule of law and the fair treatment of both citizens and legal immigrants.

We need your help! We are currently awaiting to see what the Attorney General will do regarding our ballot initiative, but we need volunteers to help raise funds and gather signatures for the petition. It's very important that this be put in front of Arkansas voters in November. We believe that the hard-working families of Arkansas have a right to say how their own tax dollars should be spent!
